Age Placement Guide

Choosing the Right Year Group

At Gothenburg International School (GIS), students are placed in year groups based on their age, previous schooling, and individual learning needs.

Our aim is to ensure that every child is placed where they can feel confident, supported, and appropriately challenged.

Age Cut-Off Date

In line with common international and Swedish practice, the age cut-off date for school entry is 31 August.

This means a child’s year group is generally determined by their age on this date.

Key Stage Structure

GIS follows the British education framework, which is organised into clear stages of learning:

• Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) – Ages 3–5

• Key Stage 1 – Ages 5–7

• Key Stage 2 – Ages 7–11

• Key Stage 3 – Ages 11–14

This structure helps ensure clear progression, continuity, and age-appropriate learning.

Individual Placement Approach

Because our students come from different national and international education systems, placement is always reviewed individually.

We consider:

• Age of the student

• Previous school reports

• English language level

• Academic development

• Social and emotional readiness

Supporting a Smooth Transition

Our admissions team works closely with families to ensure each child is placed in the most suitable year group and supported as they settle into school life.

In some cases, a short assessment or meeting may be required to support placement decisions.
