At Gothenburg International School (GIS), Key Stage 2 is a key stage in a child’s academic development where students deepen their understanding, strengthen core skills, and grow in independence.
Our approach combines strong academic foundations with personalised support in small classes, ensuring every child is challenged and supported appropriately.
Key Stage 2 builds on the foundations of Key Stage 1 and introduces a more structured academic approach.
Students develop greater depth in:
English (reading, writing, comprehension)
Mathematics
Science
Humanities and social studies
Creative and practical subjects
Physical education
Learning becomes more focused on understanding, application, and reasoning.
With a maximum of 15 students per class, teachers are able to provide close guidance and individual attention.
This allows us to:
Track academic progress closely
Provide targeted support and challenge
Strengthen student confidence
Encourage active participation and discussion
Every child is supported as an individual learner.
In Key Stage 2, students are encouraged to take more responsibility for their learning.
We help students to:
Develop independent study habits
Improve time management skills
Strengthen problem-solving abilities
Build confidence in expressing ideas
Work effectively both independently and in groups
These skills prepare students for more advanced learning in Key Stage 3.
At this stage, students begin to move beyond basic skills and develop deeper understanding across subjects.
We focus on:
Applying knowledge to real problems
Developing logical thinking
Building strong written and verbal communication skills
Encouraging curiosity and inquiry-based learning
All lessons are delivered in English, supporting continued language development and academic fluency.
Students are encouraged to use English confidently in speaking, writing, and classroom discussions.
We closely monitor each student’s progress through continuous assessment, classroom observation, and regular feedback.
Where needed, additional support or challenge is provided to ensure every child reaches their potential.
Key Stage 2 prepares students for a smooth transition into Key Stage 3 by ensuring they have:
Strong literacy and numeracy foundations
Increased independence
Confidence in learning
Effective study habits
A positive attitude toward academic challenge
At GIS, we believe Key Stage 2 is where children begin to truly develop as confident, capable learners who are ready for the next stage of their education.
