Admission Guidelines

Gothenburg International School welcomes applications for August 2027 for Years 1–9, from children aged 6 and above.

Admission to GIS is based on the student meeting the school’s age and year-group requirements, the eligibility requirements for international schools in Sweden, and availability in the appropriate year group.

Starting Age

GIS enrols students from age 6.

A child must be at least 6 years old by 31 August of the academic year in which they start at GIS.

Year-group placement is based primarily on the child’s age on 31 August, together with their previous schooling and educational background.

Who Is Eligible to Attend GIS?

As an international school in Sweden, GIS cannot admit a student solely because a family prefers English-language education.

A child may be eligible to attend GIS if at least one of the following applies:

1. The child is living in Sweden for a limited period.
2. The child has attended school abroad for an extended period and wishes to continue their education in Sweden.
3. There are established reasons to expect that the child will leave Sweden for an extended period.
4. The child uses English as a daily language with one or both legal guardians and has sufficient English to participate in and follow the teaching at GIS.

English Language

English is the main language of teaching and everyday school life at GIS.

Some children may have studied in English before, while for others it may be a new language.

A child applying under the English-language eligibility criterion must use English daily with one or both legal guardians and have sufficient English to participate in the education.

For students applying under the other eligibility criteria, we consider their age, educational background and previous experience with English as part of the admissions process.

Learning and Support Needs

Families are asked to provide relevant information about any learning, language, health or support needs during the application process.

This helps us understand the student and consider what support may be appropriate.

GIS may request additional educational or specialist documentation where relevant.

Class Size and Availability

Classes at GIS are limited to a maximum of 15 students.

Meeting the eligibility requirements does not automatically guarantee admission. A place is also subject to availability in the appropriate year group and completion of the admissions process.

Application and Admission

Families who are ready to apply may submit a formal Application for Admission directly through the GIS website.

A one-off application fee of SEK 5,000 per child is payable when the formal application is submitted. Supporting documents are also required.

Submitting an application and paying the application fee does not guarantee admission or reserve a place at GIS.

Depending on the student’s previous schooling, educational background and individual circumstances, GIS may request additional information or arrange a meeting or age-appropriate assessment.

If the application is successful and a place is available, the family will receive a formal Offer of Admission.

To confirm the place, the offer must be accepted and the one-off enrolment fee of SEK 15,000 per child paid by the deadline stated in the offer.
