Curriculum Overview

At Gothenburg International School, learning is designed to give students knowledge, understanding and the ability to think for themselves.

GIS offers an English-language international education for Years 1–9, with a British approach to education. English is the main language of teaching and learning across the school.

Academic Learning

English, Mathematics and Science are central to learning at GIS, alongside a broad range of subjects that allow students to develop their knowledge, interests and understanding of the world around them.

We want students to do more than remember information. They should be able to understand what they're learning, ask questions, solve problems, make connections and explain their thinking.

How Students Learn

Students are encouraged to take an active role in lessons rather than simply receive information.

Teachers use questioning, discussion, independent work and practical learning to help students develop a deeper understanding of each subject.

As students progress through GIS, expectations increase. They're encouraged to organise their work, think independently and take greater responsibility for their own learning.

Small Classes. Closer Attention

With a maximum of 15 students per class, teachers can follow each student's progress closely.

This means they can recognise when a student has understood something, when further explanation or practice is needed, and when they're ready for greater challenge.

Your child should not have to struggle quietly or wait weeks for someone to realise they need help.

An International Education

Students at GIS may come from different countries, cultures and education systems.

English provides a shared language for learning, while the different experiences and perspectives students bring to the classroom are an important part of school life.

Our Learning Pathway

GIS currently provides education for students from age 6, in Years 1–9.

Learning is planned so that knowledge and skills develop progressively from one year to the next. What students learn in each year prepares them for more advanced work as they move through the school.

Our aim is not to rush students towards independence simply because they've become older. We want students to become independent because they are ready — not simply because they have reached a certain age.

Preparing Students for What Comes Next

By the time students complete each stage of their education at GIS, they should have developed:

• secure knowledge across the subjects they study
• the ability to communicate clearly in English
• independent thinking and problem-solving skills
• good learning habits
• the ability to take increasing responsibility for their work
• the knowledge and skills needed for the next stage of their education
