Age Placement Guide

Choosing the Right Year Group

At Gothenburg International School, we want every student to begin in the year group that best matches their age, previous education and stage of learning.

GIS welcomes students from age 6, in Years 1–9.

Your child's age on 31 August is the starting point for placement. We then consider their previous schooling and educational background before confirming the right year group.

The Right Placement Matters

Children joining GIS come from different countries, schools and education systems. A Year 4 student in one country may not have followed the same programme as a Year 4 student elsewhere.

That's why we look beyond the name of a child's previous year or grade.

When confirming placement, we consider:

• age on 31 August
• previous school and year or grade attended
• school reports and educational background
• previous experience of learning in English

Where we need a clearer understanding of a student's current level, we may arrange an age-appropriate meeting or assessment before confirming placement.

Our aim is simple: to place each child where they're ready to learn, participate and make progress.
