Admission Guidelines

Gothenburg International School welcomes applications for Years 1–9, for children aged 6 and above. School starts on Tuesday 12 January 2027, and the application deadline is Monday 30 November 2026.

Admission is based on the child meeting the age and year-group requirements and the eligibility requirements for international schools in Sweden, and on availability in the appropriate year group.

Starting Age and Year-Group Placement

A child must be at least 6 years old by 31 August of the school year in which they start at GIS:

  • January 2027 start: age 6 by 31 August 2026
  • August 2027 start: age 6 by 31 August 2027

Year-group placement is based primarily on the child’s age on that date, together with their previous schooling and educational background. If you are unsure which year group is right, our admissions team can help.

Who Is Eligible to Attend GIS?

As an international school in Sweden, GIS cannot admit a student solely because a family prefers English-language education.

A child may be eligible to attend GIS if at least one of the following applies:

  1. The child is living in Sweden for a limited period.
  2. The child has attended school abroad for an extended period and wishes to continue their education in Sweden.
  3. There are established reasons to expect that the child will leave Sweden for an extended period.
  4. The child uses English as a daily language with one or both legal guardians and has sufficient English to participate in and follow the teaching at GIS.

In addition, your child must have a Swedish personal identity number (personnummer) to apply.

If you are unsure whether your child meets these requirements, please register your interest and our admissions team will review your circumstances.

English Language

English is the main language of teaching and everyday school life at GIS. Some children may have studied in English before, while for others it may be a newer language.

A child applying under the English-language criterion (point 4 above) must use English daily with one or both legal guardians and have sufficient English to take part in the teaching. For children applying under the other criteria, we consider age, educational background and previous experience with English as part of the admissions process.

Learning and Support Needs

Please include relevant information about any learning, language, health or support needs in your application. This helps us understand your child and consider what support may be appropriate. We may ask for additional educational or specialist documentation where relevant.

The Admissions Process

There are no application, enrolment or tuition fees.

  1. Register your interest or apply directly. Families who are ready can submit a formal application with the required supporting documents.
  2. Admissions review. We review eligibility, year-group placement, documents and availability. We may ask for more information or invite you and your child to a meeting. This is a conversation, not an exam or test.
  3. Offer of Admission. If the application is successful and a place is available, you will receive a formal Offer of Admission.
  4. Confirming the place. The place is confirmed when you accept the offer by the date stated in it.

Classes have a maximum of 15 students. Meeting the eligibility requirements or submitting an application does not guarantee admission or reserve a place.

If a Year Group Is Full

Places are offered in the order complete applications are received, as long as the child meets the eligibility requirements. If a year group is full, we will let you know.
