Curriculum Overview

A Curriculum That Nurtures the Whole Child

At Gothenburg International School, we understand that every child grows at their own pace and in their own way. We recognises this, nurturing learners as whole individuals — not just students completing assignments, but young people discovering who they are and who they can become. Throughout the GIS journey, children develop timeless qualities that guide how they think, learn, and engage with the world around them.

We follow the Cambridge curriculum, that offers a world-class education for students from Early Years( FS1 & FS2) to Year 13. Designed to inspire curiosity and academic excellence, the programme encourages children to explore ideas, ask questions, and develop the skills they need to thrive in school and beyond. Students are supported to think critically, communicate effectively, and connect learning across subjects, preparing them for success in higher education and future careers.

A Progressive Learning Journey

The Cambridge curriculum offers a coherent and structured pathway, beginning with Cambridge Early Years (Ages 3–6), followed by Cambridge Primary (Years 1–6), progressing through Cambridge Lower Secondary (Years 7–9), Cambridge IGCSE (Years 10–11), and culminating in Cambridge A-Level (Years 12–13).

Each stage builds on the previous one, allowing students to gradually develop deeper understanding, advanced skills, and a lifelong love of learning.

Academic Excellence and Real-World Skills

Students develop strong foundations in core subjects including English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities, and Languages, alongside opportunities in the Arts, Physical Education, and ICT. The curriculum emphasizes critical thinking, problem-solving, research skills, and independent learning, ensuring students are equipped to meet the challenges of an ever-changing world.

Personal Growth and Global Perspective

The Cambridge approach values more than academic success. Students are encouraged to become responsible, confident, and internationally-minded individuals. The curriculum promotes teamwork, communication, and empathy, while fostering creativity, resilience, and self-motivation. Through practical projects, collaborative learning, and extra-curricular activities, students apply knowledge to real-life situations, developing skills that last a lifetime.

Assessment and Recognition

Cambridge assessments provide reliable, internationally-recognized benchmarks of student progress. From Primary Checkpoints to IGCSE examinations and A-Level assessments, students receive constructive feedback that guides their learning journey. These qualifications are recognized by universities and employers worldwide, giving GIS students a competitive advantage when pursuing higher education or career pathways.

A Holistic and Flexible Approach

At GIS, the Cambridge curriculum is delivered in a supportive, inclusive, and engaging environment. Teachers tailor learning to individual strengths, interests, and needs, ensuring that every student can achieve their full potential. By combining rigorous academics with personal development, the Cambridge curriculum nurtures learners who are well-prepared for lifelong success.
