Curriculum Overview

A Clear, Structured and International Learning Journey

At Gothenburg International School (GIS), we provide a carefully structured academic journey designed to help every child succeed in a modern, international world.

Our curriculum is inspired by the British education framework and focuses on strong academic foundations, personal development, and the skills students need for future success.

From Early Years through to Secondary education, students follow a clear and progressive pathway that builds confidence, knowledge, and independence at every stage.

What Makes Our Curriculum Different

At GIS, learning is built around three key principles:

1. Small Class Sizes

With a maximum of 15 students per class, teachers can focus on each child as an individual. This allows for:

  • Personalised learning and support

  • Strong academic progress

  • Active participation in lessons

  • Close teacher-student relationships

2. High-Quality Academic Foundations

We place strong emphasis on core academic subjects including English, Mathematics, and Science, alongside a broad and balanced curriculum.

Students are encouraged to:

  • Think critically

  • Solve problems independently

  • Develop strong communication skills

  • Build confidence in their learning

3. International Learning Environment

GIS is an English-language international school welcoming families from around the world.

Students learn in a diverse environment that promotes:

  • Cultural understanding

  • Global awareness

  • Respect and collaboration

  • Confidence in using English in academic settings

A Progressive Learning Pathway

Our curriculum is structured into clear stages of development:

  • Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) – Ages 3–5

  • Key Stage 1 – Ages 5–7

  • Key Stage 2 – Ages 7–11

  • Key Stage 3 – Ages 11–14

  • Key Stage 4 – Ages 14–16 (Future Development)

  • Key Stage 5 – Ages 16–18 (Future Development)

Each stage builds on the previous one, ensuring consistency, stability, and clear academic progression.

Focus on Skills for the Future

Beyond academic knowledge, our curriculum develops essential life skills that prepare students for future education and beyond.

Students develop:

  • Independent thinking

  • Confidence in communication

  • Problem-solving abilities

  • Responsibility for their learning

  • Collaboration and teamwork skills

These skills are essential for success in higher education and an increasingly global world.

A Supportive and Structured Approach

We believe that students learn best in a structured, supportive, and encouraging environment.

Our teachers carefully plan lessons to ensure that every student is challenged appropriately and supported where needed. Regular feedback and assessment help track progress and ensure that no child is left behind.

Preparing Students for the Next Stage

Our curriculum provides a strong foundation for future academic pathways, including further international education and pre-university studies.

At GIS, our goal is simple: To help every child develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to succeed in their next stage of education.
